Palocsa Association

Environmental Impact Assessment of the revitalization of the regulated section of Gyöngyös-creek

The predecessor of the Palocsa Association was established in 1996 in Zalkod, in the Bodrogköz. The aim of the association is to restore the harmony of the man and nature. Today they have two main research areas; forest evolution and water management based on water retention methods. Besides research projects and landscape rehabilitation the organization participates in several policy programs (National Forest Program, Development of Vásárhelyi Plan, National Drought Strategy etc.) as well.

This time HEPF supported them to carry out an Environment Impact Assessment study for the revitalization of the Gyöngyös stream, a tributary stream of Rába river. It is known from different documents that until the last quarter of the past century the stream was belted by meadows, woods and alder groves. The central water deflection settlement changed the watercourse like that of many other creeks: the lower part of riverbed was straightened, greenery eradicated from the shores and thus, the sidebanks dried up. After gathering and analyzing historical and field information, the study will be introduced to the local governments concerned and the authorization process for the modification of the licensee plan of the stream will be started.
