The tree-planting program, a joint initiative of HEPF and the MOL Group first announced in late 2005, was set up with a double aim: to increase green areas by planting native tree species as well as to enhance cooperation and the environmental consciousness of local communities.
As a result of the selection process, 10 successful candidates out of the 65 applicants started work in the fall of 2006 to make a total area of about 90 hectares all around the country greener with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
The region-wide initiative supported by $30,000 altogether was a great success in neighbouring Romania and Slovakia too – in total, 30,000 trees and saplings and more than 6500 flowers were planted in the framework of local community events. (grant database)
The cooperation with MOL continued even after this program: a second call for proposals under the title “Green Belt” was announced in late 2006, now with a broader scope: to support the creation or rehabilitation of urban green spaces through community actions.
